My dad always explained unions to me this way...
...if he was at work and a light bulb burnt out, he was not allowed to change it. Instead he would make a call and report that it needed to be fixed. You see, there was a guy who worked for Ford whose job it was to change light bulbs. If dad changed the light bulb, he would be putting the guy out of a job.
